Planning your job: Company practices described here apply to most jobs and circumstances, not every move. Queens to Long Island is one of the most common moves we do. It's short on the map — Manhasset is right across the city line from Little Neck — but the move itself changes more than people expect: different roads, different utilities, different sanitation, and usually a lot more house to fill. Here's what to plan for.

How long does a Queens to Long Island move take?

Most moves between Queens and western or central Nassau County are completed in a single day. The biggest variables are the size of your home, stairs or elevators at the origin, and traffic on the Long Island Expressway. We'll give you a realistic timeline with your upfront quote.

Which roads can a moving truck take?

Plan with truck-specific routing, not a passenger-car route. Most NYC parkways prohibit commercial vehicles. The Grand Central has a limited RFK Bridge–western BQE exception for qualifying single-unit vehicles; it is not permission to drive across Queens on that parkway. Follow current DOT truck routes, height and weight limits, and posted restrictions for the entire trip. DOT reports truck-route changes effective October 4, 2026; check them alongside older maps.

When is the best time to drive the move?

Avoid weekday rush hours on the LIE in both directions. A mid-morning start after the morning peak usually gets the truck to Nassau faster. Mid-month and mid-week dates also tend to be easier to book than the first and last days of the month.

What should I sort out on the Queens side?

  • Building paperwork. If you're leaving a co-op, condo, or large rental, book the freight elevator and send your building a certificate of insurance well in advance.
  • Curb plan. Follow posted street rules and ask DOT or 311 whether your specific move needs authorization. The residential curb-reservation question remains unconfirmed. See moving truck parking in NYC.
  • Things not making the trip. Queens bulk items follow DSNY rules — there's a 6-item limit per collection day. Our guide to NYC bulk trash rules explains it, or we can haul it away on move day.
  • Utilities. Verify electric and gas providers for both exact addresses using the current bills and provider service checks. Con Edison and National Grid both serve parts of Queens for gas; PSEG Long Island also serves the Rockaways for electricity. Coordinate stop and start dates with your lease or closing obligations rather than automatically disconnecting the day after moving.

The responsible municipality matters. Before placing a portable storage container or parking on the street, identify the town, city, or incorporated village with jurisdiction over the actual address and obtain its current requirements. A postal place name alone does not establish jurisdiction.

How is moving into a house different from leaving an apartment?

Apartment moves are about access — elevators, stairs, narrow hallways. House moves add distance: driveways, front walks, basements, and more rooms to spread furniture across. Plan where your big pieces go before move day, and label boxes by room, including the basement and garage. Our usual practice is to protect floors and doorways at both ends. Confirm the protection plan for your building and access conditions.

Should I declutter before or after the move?

Before. Every item you move is time on the truck. Going from a Queens apartment to a Long Island house can tempt you to bring everything, but it's the right moment to sell, donate, or haul away what you don't use. We usually offer moving and removal of approved unwanted items together; confirm whether your inventory and access allow both on the same day.
